Fleetwood Covington & Leonard Jones
Fleetwood Covington uses a raw documentary approach to project a reverence, not only for the cultural/historical aspects of his subjects but also for the integrity of the individuals. Having been raised in the South, he feels a deep connection to the landscape and its people. Using oil and carbon on old rustic roofing tin he works to capture the unique beauty, energy, and humor of the rural South.
Leonard Jones paints images of Southern rural life, where the figures often face away from the viewer or have their faces obscured by the brims of hats, as if “caught unaware of the painter.” Jones still lives in a no-frills farmhouse with very few amenities that he prefers because he says it inspires him and enables him to let his paintings “take him to places.”

Outsider folk art
The founding members of our folk art collection did not consider themselves artists. They were without any formal training and were frequently referred to as self-taught, primitive, outsider or visionary artists. They had no rules but possessed a need to create. They often used materials that were readily available to them such as mud, scrap wood, house paint and tin. Through their pieces they were able to share a memory, escape from reality, or deliver a message. This art form can be complex or simple in nature, and is as expressive as the Blues, a genre that recounts memories, hardships, love and loss.
Paintings
We feature a collection of painters who specialize in various mediums including oils, acrylics, and encaustic (melted and pigmented beeswax) paintings. Their styles range in figurative works, landscapes, florals, abstracts, expressionistic works and whimsical pieces.
