Lind Hollingsworth - Painting
Lind Hollingsworth creates 2D mixed media relief paintings. She utilizes and array of materials including rag paper, mat board, wood, spackling, paper based clay, and acrylic paints to create each piece of art. One series of her work incorporates her architectural background bringing Moments in Time to life. Another series, Rivers and Trees, focuses on the contours and patterns of our waterways. And her new Icons of the Natural World is focused on the supporting roles of small creatures in our ecosystem.
While teaching art history, she became interested in icons and the belief that visual objects can possess a spiritual power. While the icons of old glorified human beings of religious significance, this Icons of the Natural World glorifies the small everyday creatures that have supporting roles in our ecosystem. Unlike the icons believed to protect the faithful, these objects of devotion need our protection. Honeybees, songbirds, frogs, turtles, monarchs and milkweed are a few included in this series.
Lind has lived in the south all her life with the last 30+ years in Savannah, Georgia, where she and her husband worked and raised two children. Her path has taken her from an architectural interior design career to teaching elementary school art. In the fall of 2000 she opened The Art School in Savannah providing after school lessons for youth, as well as figuritive drawing and art lessons for adults. This became her turning point where she began producing her own work and developed a personal style and technique.
She still enjoys teaching others to draw, paint and discover the joy of artistic creation.

“Frogs are often referred to as “the canary in the coal mine” because they are the most vulnerable to extinction. More than 3% of frog species have gone extinct and almost all of that since the 1970s. Not sure what causes the extinction, but probably climate change, HABITAT LOSS and invasive species. I love anything that eats lots of little bugs. Southern Leopard Frog, like the sliders are ubiquitous. They are everywhere, useful, cute and defenseless, especially against human activity.”

“The construction of the icons uses my mixed media technique of creating a low relief by building up rag paper, mat board, spackling and paper based clay. Paint and generous amount of metal leaf embellish the relief images of flora and fauna. In iconography, frames play the important role of separating the heavenly from the earthly. In the spirit of that concept, great care and thought has gone into the selection of the frame for each piece. In the end, I hope the icons are objects of beauty that will inspire belief in the glory of nature and the will to preserve it.” - Lind Hollingsworth

“We spend a lot of time on the Ogeechee River. After the fish kill in 2011, much of the wildlife just disappeared, all being affected by the kill. What I missed the most were the turtles. We used to see them stacked up on the tree limbs sunning themselves. As out boat approached some of them would slide off into the water. Sliders eat bugs, small fish, aquatic plant and decaying things.”

“The Right Whale is my crucifixion piece. We went to a film that ORK hosted about seismic testing that the navy and oil industry does for fossil fuel. The testing is very loud and damaging to marine animals. It can cause hearing loss and it interferes with mating and breeding.
I was drawn to the image of the whales with the ring of sound around them, because it was very iconic kind of compositition.
The Eubalaena Glacialis is one of three species of Right Whales, so named because they were the “right” whales to kill. The North Atlantic populations were decimated by over exploitation by whaling industry. They remain threatened by ship collisions and entanglement in fishing gear. The only known calving grounds lies off the Georgia and North Florida coastlines. There were no calves seen in 2018. Experts fear the whales will be extinct in 20 years.”

“The Luna Moth was an easy choice for an icon. Sighting one of these beautiful creatures always feels magical. In late August of 2017, when I had barely begun this piece, we traveled to Lake Jocassee, SC to watch the total solar eclipse. One of the first things I saw when I arrived was a Luna Moth. I had not seen one in years. I went to get my camera, but when I returned, it was gone.”

“I struggled with which small creature to honor with the last small icon. A bat kept coming to mind. Because the bat is often associated with Satan in religious art, I resisted. But, they are also pollinators and have to eat at least half their body weight insects each night! In the choir of Notre Dame du Paris this past June, I saw a repetitive relief carving of bats underneath scenes from the life of Jesus. About a week later, I visited Leonardo da Vinci’s last residence in Amboise, France. In his Cabinet of Curiosities, there was a bat, wings spread and pinned to a board. I took it as a sign and created Little Brown Bat.”

“Honeybees came immediately to mind when thinking about creatures that need protection and healing. The Worker Bee are females who build the nests and gathers pollen to bring back to the hive to be used as food for the developing brood. They too are responsible for cross pollination.”
